Something New
LP.2108.7.3 | Orange, 2nd generation, ® Logo
Late 1974-early 1975
LP.2108.7.3 is still the second incarnation of the orange label but this later variation is recognized by its black perimeter print on the label and its new Registered (®) logo. Otherwise, this variation is identical to LP.2108.7.1.
Availability
This variation appeared towards the end of 1974 or January of 1975, until a new RCA Dyanflex pressing was offered in 1975 (see LP.2108.7.4).
General Information
The only difference between this variation and the earlier "TM" variation is the legal rights logo that changed from "Trade Mark" to "Registered" beside the "Capitol" logo on the bottom of the label. This also marks the moment where the band's back catalogue released in the USA left the Apple label behind and started reissuing records on the orange label -- this is where the USA and Canada label designs realigned. Second generation orange label pressings with the ® logo, and third generation orange label pressings are much more common than earlier TM Logo pressings.
Pressing Information
Columbia (CBS) remained Capitol of Canada's subcontractor for this later run of "second generation" orange labels, it is fifth Something New Columbia pressing since LP.2108.6.4. The records were still pressed from the same plates as all the previous Columbia pressings, and the matrix numbers are identical. Having multiple variations made from the same plates between 1970 and 1975 can give an indication that demand was much lower than it was in the 60s, with small quantities made at a time, until earlier plates were worn out. The markings are:
Side 1: ST-1-2108
Side 2: ST-2-2108
These pressings feature the 68 mm thin pressing ring, a hallmark of CBS pressings, instead of RCA's 70 mm deep groove.
Cover
The cover of this variation is similar in design to the previous variations and was also manufactured by Modern Graphics, with the corrected ST-2108 catalog number at the top. These covers have a new slightly wider 8 mm straight inner seam, denoting a new carboard frame model.
The cover construction type is identical to all previous variations, with a front slick construction.
Packaging
This edition was shipped in tight shrink wrap, with or without a plain paper LP inner sleeve. These Capitol sleeves are square and have a slight curve at the top.
