A Hard Day's Night Variations List

A Hard Day's Night
(US Format)

LP.11921.13.1 | Retro Rainbow (Columbia)
1984-August 1988

This variation was released on the retro rainbow label, pressed by Columbia (CBS) around 1984. This pressing is the most common of the retro rainbow pressing variations, and features a new Columbia made master, and best-sounding pressing of the album.

Availability

This variation (LP.11921.13.1) was available around 1984-August 1988 (for approximately four years). It is easier to find than the CINRAM pressing (LP.11921.14.1), but is still a scarce variation.

General Information

When pressing operations were phased out at the Mississauga plant in late 1983, Columbia became the official subcontractor for Capitol's LP pressing needs. This lasted until August 1988, when Cinram took over for the ultimate series of reissues, coinciding with the worldwide launch of the Beatles' catalogue on CD, and Beatles records being imported from the UK or the USA from this point on.

Pressing Information

This pressing was manufactured by Capitol's new subcontractor: Columbia, who prepared new masters for every Beatles title. These pressings can be identified by the 28 mm thin pressing ring.

Matrix numbers feature the new Columbia-made stereo mix and matrix number:

SW-11921-A 1A 2HDK:
SW-11921-B 1A 2HDK:

Even though Columbia prepared a brand new master, the original "fake stereo" mixes were still used on these new releases. Only the George Martin instrumentals were in true stereo.

Cover

This Capitol reissue features the same cover as the previous few variations, with the Capitol dome logo added to the top left of the front cover, while the back cover legal information shows the Capitol / EMI information. This Ever Reddy cover also used a similar posterboard construction.

Packaging

This edition was shipped in tight shrink wrap, with a square polyethylene inner sleeve. These Columbia (CBS) sleeves are square and have a straight cut opening with UNEVEN sides (making it easier to open to manipulate the record inside).
