45.72144.1.2 covers the -2 repressings of the first label design. The very first pressing (45.72144.1.1) carried a "no dash" matrix number; once the original parts were replaced, a dash and number were added, and these -2 copies carried the title for the rest of the first label's run. Considering how strongly this title sold, the -2 copies most likely appeared soon after first pressings.

Availability

Copies with a -2 matrix on side A were most likely pressed around the spring of 1964, and technically remained available up until mid 1966, when the brackets label design took over. They are by far the most common form of the first label design, which is consistent with the -2 parts serving for the vast majority of the run (with one odd -5 exception).

The -2 repressings are identical to the first pressing in every visible way: same yellow and orange swirl label, same "Capitol of Canada" perimeter print, same typesetting. Only the hand-written matrix number in the dead wax distinguishes them.

Pressing Information

These copies were pressed from a second generation of parts, identified by the added "dash and number" in the matrix. The label itself is unchanged from the first pressing.

Packaging

Commercial stock copies came in the same FLAT black Capitol sleeve as the first pressing, in use since December 1963.

Sales

The official 1964 figure of 208 251 Canadian copies covers the whole first label run and cannot be split between the no-dash and -2 pressings. The fact that most surviving copies are a -2 at most, against sales well above 200 000 copies, is one of the strongest clues that matrix numbering was not tied to every new metal stamper but to a new lacquer higher up the chain.
