Twist And Shout Variations List

Twist And Shout

This album was a unique Canadian release

LP.6054.5.1 | Red Target label

Variation LP.6054.5.1 was released only in MONO. This pressing is recognized by its distinctive Red Target label. This series of Beatles pressings is unique to Canada (the US reissued Capitol albums on the Apple label instead). Early copies featured a Parr's cover in a lighter shade of pink, while later copies introduced the newer Modern Graphics cover.

Availability

This variation was available between 1971 and 1972 (approximately one year), until the label was changed to the orange design with gold text (see LP.6054.6.1).

General Information

This pressing is much more common and marks the "return" of the 6000 series albums in the Canadian Beatles catalogue (see previous entry for details). The Red Target series is also very interesting from a collector's point of view because in Canada, all Capitol albums were re-released with this label design, while Capitol USA reissued their albums on the Apple label instead, making all these Red Target pressings unique to Canada. Only two albums were mistakenly released on the Red Target label in the USA: Yesterday and Today and Revolver; those are quite rare and fetch a few hundred dollars each, but shouldn't be confused with the Canadian Red Target pressings of the same albums, which are relatively common compared to their US counterparts.

The Red Target pressing of Twist And Shout marks the "return" of the 6000 series Beatles albums in the catalogue, which would remain until the late 1980s.

Pressing Information

After a short hiatus (during which pressing of the three unique Canadian albums was paused), Capitol of Canada once again subcontracted the RCA pressing plant in Smiths Falls (Ontario) to manufacture new batches of albums, this time with the new "Red Target" label. No green target label pressings have been confirmed to date, so this marks Capitol's decision to keep offering these albums to Canadian fans even though the three US albums were also available. Known copies have "-2" matrix numbers on both sides:

Side 1: XEX-455-2
Side 2: XEX-456-2

Cover

The cover of this variation is identical to that of the previous variation (LP.6054.2.1), printed by Parr's Litho, with a straight inner seam construction measuring approximately 7 mm. Some copies may also be found with smaller 4 mm inner seams.

Most Red Target copies feature a much lighter shade of pink (left: regular cover, right: Red Target cover).

From this point on, Capitol branched out to a new company (Modern Graphics) to print their covers. While remaining Parr's covers can be found as late as 1973, this variation is where new "MG" covers were introduced gradually (these covers featured a snuffed out Parr's logo and a new MG logo below it). Copies of LP.6054.5.1 can therefore be found with either the light pink Parr's cover, or the newer MG cover, which gradually replaced the Parr's covers completely by 1974.

Otherwise, the cover construction is identical to that of all previous variations, with a traditional front slick construction.
