LP.2108.7.1 is the second incarnation of the orange label. This early variation is recognized by its black (or darker) perimeter print on the label (instead of gold), a slight change in perimeter text ("Capitol-EMI") and its Trade Mark (™) logo.
Availability
This variation was available in 1974 only (for less than a year) before Capitol started featuring a ® logo instead, as early as January 1975 (see LP.2108.7.3). Copies with an unusual misprinted back slick circulated during the same period (see LP.2108.7.2).
General Information
Although orange pressings are quite common in general, these earlier 2nd generation orange labels are more difficult to find; 2nd generation with the ® logo, and third generation orange label pressings are much more common than these earlier ™ Logo pressings.
Second generation orange labels can be identified by the BLACK perimeter print around the label that is much easier to read than the previous gold text. Early copies had a dark (rather than full black) text. This pressing would have been made in small quantities when demand required a new run of pressings to restock the warehouse. Once again, this label generation was unique to Canada at this point since Capitol USA opted for the Apple label for their Capitol reissues until 1975.
Pressing Information
As with the last first generation pressings, Capitol of Canada subcontracted the Columbia (CBS) pressing plant to manufacture new batches of albums with the new "second generation" orange labels. Matrix numbers are identical to the previous variations, being made from the same plates. Having multiple variations made from the same plates between 1970 and 1974 can give an indication that demand was much lower than it was in the 60s, with small quantities made at a time, until earlier plates were worn out. The markings are:
Side 1: ST-1-2108
Side 2: ST-2-2108
These pressings feature the 68 mm thin pressing ring, a hallmark of CBS pressings, instead of RCA's 70 mm deep groove.
Cover
The cover of this variation is similar in design to the previous variations and was also manufactured by Modern Graphics, with the regular white printer’s logo on the front. These covers have a 7 mm straight inner seam. The top strip at the top of the front cover correctly reads ST 2108 on this variation.
The cover construction is identical to all previous variations, with a front slick construction.
Packaging
This edition was shipped in tight shrink wrap, with or without a plain paper LP inner sleeve. These Capitol sleeves are square and have a slight curve at the top.
