Something New Variations List

Something New

LP.2108.11.1 | Purple 3rd generation (Capitol)
1980-1983

LP.2108.11.1 was released on the third generation purple label around 1980. This pressing is almost identical to LP.2108.10.1, but the label perimeter text has been changed to "Distributed in Canada Under License By Capitol Records" in a thinner font. This is possibly one of the most common variations of the album.

Availability

This variation was available between 1980 and 1983 (for approximately three years). This pressing is relatively common, and can relatively often be found still sealed today.

General Information

This pressing variation is the most common version of the old-style purple label pressings. As with the previous two variations, Capitol pressed these records on regular thicker vinyl compared to earlier Dynaflex pressings. This pressing is the last variation of the album to have been pressed at Capitol's Mississauga pressing plant; later pressings on the retro rainbow label were pressed by Columbia (CBS) - (see LP.2108.13.1).

Pressing Information

This pressing was also manufactured at Capitol's pressing plant in Mississauga, Ontario. These pressings can be identified by the medium size (39 mm) pressing ring, characteristic of Capitol pressings.

Matrix markings reveal a hybrid set of masters on this variation. Side 1 was still pressed from the 1976 Capitol lacquer used on the two previous variations (hand-written catalogue number, H22 lacquer code and stamped MASTERED BY CAPITOL marking), but side 2 now carries a brand new master:

Side 1: ST-1-2108 H22
Side 2: ST-2108 B TLC-T

The TLC-T marking indicates that this new side 2 lacquer was cut at "The Lacquer Channel" in Toronto, from a Transco blank lacquer disc. The same combination appears on the purple 3rd generation pressing of Twist And Shout (see LP.6054.11.1), while the equivalent Beatlemania! pressing received Lacquer Channel masters cut on Apollo blanks, marked TLC-A (see LP.6051.11.1).

Pressings with TLC masters on both sides are possible, but have not yet been documented.

Cover

The cover of this variation is almost identical to the previous variations (posterboard construction), except on the spine: the mistaken "Super Jac" designation found on LP.2108.9.1 and 10.1 has been removed (see the spine image below); the spine now features only the Modern Graphics printer logo with its "Litho in Canada" credit. The back cover carries the same legal information and target logo as before.
